Keyaki Tuesdays

by kyle on April 24, 2012

Today I taught at Keyaki Elementary School 「けやき小学校」. It’s a pretty neat place. It’s in the center of town (near the City Office, etc) and has a beautiful campus. I taught 3rd and 4th grades, and it went well. Fourth graders 「4年生」 are pretty fun to teach. They have a basic knowledge of token English sayings and can retain things that they want to. Third graders 「4年生」 just want to have fun. It’s their lesson and they can have fun if they want to. They can feel the fun in the air, tonight.

After my classes I got into a fight with a printer. Shit was mad real. I was all ctrl+p’n as best I could when I suddenly hear “CHUUUUR CHURRR” and I immediately knew. Every molecule that makes me the ontological me vibrated in the same pattern; from my head to my toes. “Christ, it’s the Paper Jam.” I said to myself, “Not again.” Then I went to my Language director and dropped a hard “Sumimasen” followed by an unbroken “Chotto ee?” When he saw the look in my eyes, he knew. The whole room went silent. “Fuck.” I thought to myself. Why me? Why did the Jam have to happen now? We silently walked to the printer. I pointed. “Doushio?” Hatcho-sensei smiled and said “Don’t mind~ don’t mind~” and fixed it. Mad intense shit.

After school I went to Daiso and bought things. Then I visited the colonel. Then I went home.

Ashikaga; It’s windy here.

Life in Ashikaga「足利」 feels pretty good. New places to explore. New people to meet. New secrets to uncover. New words to be spoken. New food to be eaten. –But we all drink the same beers & smoke the same tobaccos. Cultural equalizers.

My school life has been pretty good so far. The staff at both of my schools are very kind and helpful. They’ve created a very welcoming environment for me. My students are also great. Elementary school kids operate on a level that I can relate to quite easily. I wonder why? Must be some deep level brain wavelength or something.

I had a シラス onigiri the other day. Which, as it turns out, is packed full of delicious シラス — whitebait. What’s whitebait, you might ask? Dohoho~ let me tell you, friend. They are tiny premature sardines. Delicious, huh? The taste wasn’t the problem. It was the dozens of black eyes staring at me from a cocoon of rice and plastic. “Eat me, aibou. I’ll satisfy you with satisfying satisfaction.” I felt sorry for my long-dead friends, so i buried them outside my apartment. Poor guys.

I’ve been super busy making lesson plans and lesson materials these past few weeks. Ah, and drinking a lot of alcohol, too. Japan has loads of that. My lesson materials are becoming easier and easier to prepare now that I’ve amassed a decent sized collection of flashcards, worksheets and game materials. In the past few days I’ve finally gotten around to making prizes and creating a few “backup plans”.
